High Above Vermont

High Above Vermont

One of the most important photography tips I’ve learned is to always look for a new perspective. Since last summer I have been flying a DJI Mavic Pro drone to capture photos and videos around Vermont. It has greatly expanded my aerial perspective. In the past I would hire an airplane once a year to take photos; now I take five minutes to set up my drone, plug in my smartphone to the remote controller and fly! The experience has been liberating. Now, if I have a spare fifteen minutes, I can launch my one-and-a-half pound drone into the skies of Vermont and get new views of familiar Green Mountain landscapes. Because I live in Brandon and have a young son, many of my drone photos are from the area.

Brandon has a compact historic downtown and visually interesting landscapes nearby. We get so used to the views we see from our car windows as we make our daily commutes to schools, shops and work. Once airborne, roads, rivers, lakes, fields and towns take on new visual dimensions. Sunlight casts shadows on trees. Farm fields make abstract patterns of cultivation. Using the drone has reinvigorated my enthusiasm for photography.
